Biography

I would like to take this opportunity to review some of our classroom expectations and major assignments that will be assigned this 2008-2009 school year. These assignments include: Composition Notebook, Portfolio, District test, and TAKS.

Students should have (two) composition notebooks to keep their completed work and work in progress; additionally they should come to class with a writing instrument everyday. The composition notebooks will be used to write Quick Writes and to store grammar assignments. These notebooks are also known as Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN).

Writing samples in the portfolio will be taken through the writing process Pre-write, draft, revise, edit, final). These samples will be graded based on the district rubric standards. Also, students will reflect on each sample. This portfolio will be a work in progress, writing several samples year round.

Students will be given a letter size file folder
First/Last name printed on the tab. Table of Contents Page will be glued inside the folder

District Common Assessment (DCA)
These are Alief ISD tests given every nine weeks. DCAs help to assess student learning. It also notifies teachers of students who may need additional interventions. Interventions such as: modifications in teaching, re-teaching lessons, and tutoring. DCAs should be taken seriously. DCAs are major grades!

Texas Assessment of Knowledge Skills (TAKS Writing)
The TAKS Writing Test will be administered March 3, 2009. The test assesses student grammar/writing abilities to make sure that students are meeting state standards. Students will be provided with test preparation and more information will be sent home via mail/ phone as the test approaches.

Tutorials
Additionally, tutorials are offered Tuesday & Thursday from 8:15a.m.-8:45a.m. When students are absent or need additional help, it is their responsibility to attend tutorials for any missing assignments.

Thanks in advance for your support, and I look forward to a great year!
